Day 25 ... UPDATE: Introducing the chick that survived (Photos)

I helped the one chick. He was giving up, breathing less & I said win or loose. Got down on my belly with tweezers, note pad under the egg, warm washcloth & desk lamp over the chick to keep him warm. The membrane was left in tack. He's alive, kicking around & the umbilical cord is still attached but not for long as it's drying out. So far, he's doing great. I know someone told me to leave him be because I saw veins but my mama instincts kicked in.

If this makes you feel any better, I have tried twice to hatch eggs and both times it didn't work. I am now on my third time and see a baby in 2 out of 12 so I haven't had much luck either. I know how hard it is to hatch chicks, it drives me crazy! Congrats on your new chick and I hope it continues to do well

I'm so glad you have a live one! Is this the only one so far? Keep giving us updates. This is why I am not sure I want to hatch eggs again----although one of my bantam hens is sitting on some right now. I haven't even candled one of them.

Congrats on fluffy #1!!! Any more little peeps, JulieZ??

Sometimes you just gotta follow that gut feeling. I had to do the same for my EE egg last nite. He/she was doing just fine this morning, and is now in the brooder with the other three. Congratulations, and don't give up hatching, it just takes a little practice, is all. It's just like anything else.....no one is born knowing it all, you gotta learn as you go. Is well worth it all in the end.

All of my Barred Rock eggs died. Very devastating. I will be getting photos to diary the growth my funky, unknown to BYC mix breed. He is a beautiful bird. But being the only one bothered me. I took a 2 hour trip to Sawmills Farm in Live Oak, Florida yesterday to pick up "a" Light Brahma the same age. I came back with 3. That is sorta making it easier to deal with BUT I want a batch of BR's.

Giving up on incubation? I'm on my 2nd attempt right now. I started with 47 eggs, I'm down to 36. These are my crossed eggs for meat (we'll see how that goes too !!). What development compared to the BR's. I put a ton in expecting half would be tossed out. By day 7 with the BR's, most were gone. If I do not have at least a 35-40% hatch rate this round, I'll probably call it a day. This is VERY heart & nerve wrenching.
