Hi everyone! I’m on day 27 with this Cayuga duck egg and I’m a bit concerned about it. I candeled it to check on it and I feel like it shouldn’t look like this. I see lots of movement and when I put the egg down I can see it slightly move, but I don’t see any “distinct” duck features in there. It looks like cells stuck to the side that are moving. Any ideas?

I'm terrible at 'still photo candling', so if you say you see lots of movement, I'll take your word for it.

But I can tell you that it's normal to not see any distinct duck feature. The only thing you'll clearly see is the bill in the air cell after internal pip.

I should've taken a video, just thought of that. I for sure see movement, I just thought the egg would look more filled? and it doesn't. This is my first go round with hatching, so it's all new to me. I also watched tons of videos where you can hear them doing their little quacks and again, there's none of that. I'm just a paranoid egg hatcher.

About that, I think your air cell look really small (photo 8EC58137 and 21E30279), so maybe it's normal that your duckling doesn't fill the egg, because there's a lot of excess space to be filled. If your air cell is normal-sized then the egg should appear more solid.

Sorry, normally when candling my own eggs I'd rotate the eggs around the long axis as I move the light to different angles, I just can't judge anything when I can't do that.

Maybe your temperature was on the low side so your egg's not at that stage yet. I'd be worried if your air cell is really as small as I think it is. It might drown or suffocate. After it internally pips I'd make a safety hole.

Definitely doesn't look right for day 27 and I don't see any vessels either. Possibly it's gone..Even when dead they will slosh around..

That's what I felt too actually, but I'm just terrible at judging from photo so I'm not sure. I'm hoping that it really moves as the OP says. Normally I move my own eggs very gently so I don't have any dead egg sloshing.

Where are you (OP) located? Judging from the thigh and the shorts of your assistant and your floor and the size of the air cell, you're somewhere tropical, aren't you? Ah, but you did say cayuga egg, so maybe you're in the States after all.

Gosh, I wish. I’m in Wisconsin just tropical plant obsessed. I’m going to try to get a video shortly and hopefully that helps. I just don’t have a good feeling and so bummed.

I've decided to just let it be. I can candle it until my head is spinning but in the end, it's probably best to just let it be and give it time. Tomorrow morning I will probably make a safety hole, or maybe tonight and then just let it be. Crossing my fingers, although I have a feeling it's going to be a no go. I will keep you all updated. Thank you so much for the responses.

Definitely don't make any holes in the egg before it internally pips because it will definitely die if not ready..
