Hi, I would really appreciate any help I am really worried. This is my first time incubating

We just began Day 29 2 hours ago. For 2 days the egg has been rocking around and there has been small shadows in the air cell but I don't think he's internally pipped (no peeping, no clicking, does not look like pictures of internal pips). I think he is pressing up against it, trying to break the membrane, but doesn't seem to be able to. Isn't 2 days an abnormal amount of time to see shadowing with no internal pip?

How long does he have in there before he won't make it? From what I'm seeing, you almost never want to create an internal pip... is that correct? But if he won't make it anyway, should I try? Is there anything at all I can do to help him along?

Really appreciate any help at all, thank you so much!

It's possible that is it an internal pip, but he might be malpositioned in such a way that he can't really get into the air cell further, and can't externally pip or zip. A foot over head malposition would be an example of such a thing.

It's your call, but you could try making a tiny hole in the air cell, just big enough to look in and see what's happening. This close to hatch, doing so shouldn't hurt anything, even if he isn't really internally pipped yet.

Thank you so much for the reply!! I decided to prop up the air cell end last night and then check on him throughout the night. I checked on him at 11am (4 hours ago) and noticed there was actually an external pip and in the right location! He must have externally pipped sometime between 9am and 11am. But isn't that unusual to go from internal to external pip so quickly? Is that a red flag in any way/should I do anything differently? The external pip has not gotten any bigger though he seems to be trying. It also is not really open, it's just a crack... can he still get air if it isn't actually a hole? He also has not broken through the outer membrane at all. Will he run out of air if there's no hole in the outer membrane?

Really appreciate the help!!

He can still get air through the crack, even if the membrane wasn't pierced :) But if it makes you nervous, you can open it up a little bit more for him.

Such a short time between internal and external pip is unusual, but wouldn't really cause problems. It's possible that what you saw, the shadowing, was an internal pip all along.

Ahh ok! Thanks, that's really helpful! Just one more question, he hasn't made a single peeping noise. I always hear people say that they peep. Why would that be... should I be concerned?

That's normal :) I don't ever really hear mine peep unless I tap on the egg and talk to them.

Hi again, sorry to bother you but the gosling has made absolutely no progress in 24 hours. I chipped away just a little bit of the shell so that he could get more air and he seems to be REALLY trying, but hasn't even broken the outer membrane. At what point do I break the outer membrane? Thanks so much
