i let mine swim for the first time when they were 3 or 4 days old but only in very warm water under supervision and not for long. Make sure you dry them off when there done swimming

I will tell you from first hand only put water enough for them to stand in at least till they are older. We about had a drowning with deeper water and it was no fun! But I would never recommend anyone not to let them swim because it is the cutest thing in the world to watch!

I let mine swim in a bathtub with warm (definitely not hot) water once they are 48 hours old. They take to it like ducks to water. I give them water that's deep enough to float and dive in - about 4 inches deep. Put something in the bath for them to get out and stand on - I use a breadboard sitting on a couple of upturned bowls. It's important to watch them and to take them out once they start to slow down and get lower in the water as their down soaks up water. Maybe 5 to 10 minutes. Dry them with paper towels and put them back in the warm brooder, where they can finish drying themselves.

Next time out finely chopped greens or squashed peas in the bath so they can dabble and dive for them.

ok so i have 6 ducklings in brooder and 1 in the incubator and the one in the incubator has a really long umbilecal cord. longer than all the others is this normal?

Let it work it off itself. If by chance it never budges (give it a day) you can cut it off. But only if it's the consistency of a cooked piece of spaghetti that your 3 yr old has thrown on the floor two days ago, but you just noticed it.

lol. Yes, hard and dried up and nasty. I prefer to let them do it on their own, but every once in awhile one doesn't budge.


ETA: Maybe nasty is the wrong word. But def. dry and shriveled looking.

Trim dry cord.

let the babies swim in WARM not hot water. Dry them after. I ususally put them in the tub before I clean it, and while they paddle for 10 minutes, I change out their bedding in the brooder. Catch them, dry with a towel gently, then into the fresh new digs.
