Hi guys,

I just completed my very first hatch using my own flock's eggs, and I call it a great success: 15 beautiful babies out of 15 fertile eggs!

However, one of the chicks' feet stay curled and don't splay out normally, the baby can't walk and just waddles around - I seem to remember reading here somewhere that there was an easy fix, something like taping the feet on some cardboard?

I can't find the link.... can anyone please help?

Baby chick and I thank you!

Ooops my bad... thank you for the link, however it's NOT club foot - I don't know why I called it that!

My chick's feet are in the same curled position as when they first hatch - the toes don't want to distend flat on the ground on their own, so baby is hobbling around.

Can I tape the feet in correct position on a bit of cardboard, one "splint" for each foot?

If yes, what kind of tape should I use?

How long to leave the splint?

THANK YOU!!

Ok, here what you do.....works really well, you can tape a dime to the bottom of their feet. You just put that dime under the little one's foot like you would a shoe sole, and then you tape it on with surgical tape. That will hold the toes straight, and soon they will stay that way.

Excellent - thank you!!

I'll try the cardboard and bandaid trick as I don't have surgical tape - hope it works!!

i have a chicken born like that too. she turned out fine, and is the sweetest thing! actually, our attemps to "fix" her feetonly made it worse, i think. don't worry about your chicky, she'll adapt just fine. you might not want to let her free range when she's older, though, unless you'll be right there. predetors take advantage of weaker prey! have fun with your chicks and DON'T WORRY ABOUT THEM!!!!!!!!
