Day old chicks pecking eyes

I put 6 RIR chicks in with my JG's. They would peck at the RIR eyes too. I was so afraid!!! But within a day or 2 it was over. No they all get along the same. NOw they are trying to fly and roost on the feeder and waterer. They are 4 weeks old today! It should be ok.

I noticed that one of my black chicks - barred rock - constantly picked at the eyes of the Buff Orpingtons - yellow chicks. I have two brooders set up - one as backup - learned that last time around - and simply separated the black chicks - the Barred Rocks and Silver Laced Wyandottes (both black chicks) into one. The pecking stopped immediately. I have 27 chicks this go around, so I think they were a little crowded in the 4X2 horse trough. Splitting them up for a few days shouldn't make that big a difference in the long run. I hope when they go back together the pecking will have resolved itself.
