Day old chicks will be here tomorrow! Couple questions....

This is my first time buying day old chicks online from mypetchicken.com so I'm not sure what to expect. They are shipping USPS. When they arrive anything I should do immediately? I read somewhere to give them sugar water? There are 4 of them coming, after December 1st the minimum required to ship was goes up to 15. (I assume because of cooler weather and the more chicks the more they keep each other warm.) It is mid 50's during the day here in northern indiana right now. So what should I do after receiving them? Brooder is set up and ready to go- temp 95 deg. On warm side. Sooo......go!

Go to Tractor Supply now and buy a small bottle of poultry Nutri drench. when these chicks come they are going to be travel stressed, that's a bad thing . poultry Nutri drench dosage: give each chick one drop only by mouth . For needy chicks, Repeat every 8 to 10 hours until perky.
put one and a half teaspoons in a quart waterer and feed it to them for the next week while they get adjusted to their new house . here is the website for poultry nutridrench.

it's an excellent emergency nutritional supplement does a wonderful job of combating travel stress . The thing is, Nutri drench doesn't need to be digested. it's great because it main lines directly into the bloodstream and gets the energy to the to the chick fast.

Ease them from a cool to your warm environment. I personally use medicated starter feed, chick grit, and stir Magic Water into your regular water, which provides energy to overcome their stressful travel experience. Recipe: 1/2 gallon warm water, 2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar, 2 large pressed garlic cloves, 1/2 cup honey, 2 pinches salt, 2 pinches soda. I start with mixing about 50% into their water and strengthen to 75% Magic Water. Good luck!

So my wife picked this food up for them. Will this be efficient enough by itself? It is non-medicated but I did pay for the chick vaccination...not sure what all that entails.

So I should slowly let them warm up and not put them in the 95 degree brooder right away?

Just wanted to say hi @45pro We are in the same spot. We ordered from the same place and are anxiously awaiting their arrival. Also our first time. You should call your local post office as each has their own way of doing things. Mine told me to expect a phone call at around 0600 !

I never thought of calling my local post office, if I do, I assume I will get notified earlier of their arrival than I would have? What chicks did you get? Each person in my family picked 1 chick, for a total of 4. All different breeds. Super blue egg layer for my daughter, lavender Orpington for the wife, son wanted an Australian, and I got a golden cuckoo Marans. Also ordered an incubator and 6 bantam golden sebright eggs to try and hatch.

I had her in my cart - and then there were none available LOL I also had the Super Blue and the Lavender Orpington in my cart - but in the end I went with 2 of the Cream Legbar's and 1 Buff Orpington. I was very close to pulling the trigger with 1 Cream Legbar, 1 Lavender Orpington and 1 Super Blue but - decisions decisions! LOL

I had her in my cart - and then there were none available LOL I also had the Super Blue and the Lavender Orpington in my cart - but in the end I went with 2 of the Cream Legbar's and 1 Buff Orpington. I was very close to pulling the trigger with 1 Cream Legbar, 1 Lavender Orpington and 1 Super Blue but - decisions decisions! LOL

I believe it said there was 3 left when I put 1 in my cart. I ordered Saturday night I believe. I did not see the legbar at all. I'l have to look it up. I went with the golden cuckoo because I wanted something different than everyone else and it was about the only option left and I liked the looks of it. I really wanted some bantams but they are out of stock EVERYWHERE. I ended up finding 6 sebright bantam eggs on eBay for $35 and picked up an incubator to try. Should be a neat experience even if the hatch fails. Once it' more in season and more accessible we may try again if we don't find bantam chicks in stock. My issue was the minimum amount. I don' need or want 15-25 chickens, just a few will do!

Let me know how your chicks are doing/acting when you receive them. I'm not sure if I'll get mine tomorrow or Wednesday. I got an email today around 2pm saying they shipped, tracking just shows a shipping label was created. Where are you located? I' in northern indiana and they are coming from polk, Ohio. About 4 hours away.
