I'm going to be ordering my chicks soon but confused as to what to order. We can order the hatch day choice, the layer variety or by breed.barred rock ,red sex linked, black sexed linked, road island red, leghorn, columbia rock x red,red x columbia rock, new hampshire x barred rock. I'm looking for a friendly, quite, dependable layer, must be cold weather tollerant.

Also do I get day olds, or 2,3,4 week started? what's the ups and downs to getting day olds compaired to started?

Day old chicks are the norm. you can get pullets that are close to point of lay, but they will cost you a pretty penny. I've never seen them sold any other way. The older chicks would not survive the shipping process. Day old chicks still have the yolk left to sustain them for the first 3 days.

The supplier ships the chicks that day and you pick them up that day the farm is less then 3 hours away. They only sell leg horns that are 2 weeks old redy to lay is 5x the cost so that's out, the started is $1 more.
