I am interested in getting a few chickens but I have been seeing raccoons moving around my neighborhood in the day. Is there any way to let the chickens roam the yard and keep them safe from these raccoons?

Kill them, or capture them and have animal control pick them up. Build a coop and run safe from raccoons, which will be expensive. The fact they are out in daylight, walking around, means they are dangerous.

Raccoons out in the daytime might be ill; out here we would shoot first if possible, and talk to the DNR about them. Rabies? Canine distemper? Somebody raising the cute babies illegally? They wouldn't be welcome here! Chickens need a predator proof coop at night, and a safe run for days when they can't free range. Then you will have fun with your birds. Mary

Coons out during the day doesn't mean they are necessarily ill or any more dangerous than at night.
Many normally nocturnal animals will hunt during the day if the need is great enough.

That said, any free range bird is in danger from a number of predators...depends on the location.
Best to have a safe coop and run in case you need them.

There are other considerations to letting chickens roam your yard:
Will they stay in the yard?
Will your neighbor tolerate them in their yards?
Will they destroy your gardens?
Will you tolerate them pooping all over your patio, deck, lawn furniture, vehicles, etc?
...just a few things to think about.
