Daylight Savings Time & Egg Production?

Do you find that the switch over to DST changes your flock's egg production in any way? Also, do they naturally bump their bedtime back as dusk falls at a later hour in the spring and summer?

Yes, and yes. Sometimes in the summer it is 9:30 or 10 before they go to bed because there is still daylight. Mine are free range so I have to wait for them to decide to go to bed to put them up. If you have yours in a pen I'm sure you could get them in a coop before then but they won't roost until it is dark in there.

Until chickens take up golf and get a hankering for evening barbecues, they couldn't care less about daylight saving. Daylight saving is a political construct to provide millions in additional business for the above mentioned industries. Humans have to synchronize their time pieces in order to keep appointments. It only affects you chickens if you run your daily care of them off the clock instead of the sun.

Chickens wake up at first light and go to roost at last light, no matter what our clocks say. Their inner clocks determine when they lay their eggs.
