Hey, y'all. I'm in eastern NC and new to the flock. I helped tend an established flock of about 300 many years ago but this is my first time establishing my own flock. I have a total of 5 chicks right now because our space is limited. I'd love to have more but I'm happy to have these 5 for now. I think I have Americana? I don't remember. I love to crochet even though I'm not very good at it. I'm a stay-at-home-grandma, happily married to my teenage crush. We have 4 dogs, 2 cats, a Blue & Gold macaw, and a bearded dragon. One of my chicks has pasty butt and in my search for care tips, I found BYC. Happy to be here and learn from everyone.
 
When I purchased my 4 chicks, the gal at Rural King offered me a free chick because it has pasty butt. She said it had lived over a week with it so she figured it'd be ok eventually. I have it separated from the other 4, feed, bedding, water, heat, etc. and I'm cleaning the vent daily with warm running water. Hen or rooster, the name is Elmer, for Elmer's glue --> pasty butt. I brought Elmer home Saturday, 23 August 2025. Will it likely resolve soon?
 
Have you used tissue and warm, soapy water to remove the trapped poop? You can rub the vent opening with Vaseline or olive oil. Is it possible to get the chick to drink by dipping its beak into sugar water or electrolyte water? Do you have a vitamin electrolyte drop like Poultry NutriDrench? Take two to three drops orally. Combine some water and chick crumble, then serve it with some egg yolk. A few drops of olive oil should be added.
