Everyone has to make a choice as to what they use for pests. Before I bought it I did a bit of research and would like to pass on the info. Bottom line though, if it works for you and have had no problems then do what you will. I have read here in posts that it is okay to use with no worries. I have read that it is okay to use but you cant eat their eggs for a week. And I have read dont ever use it. I found an entry on another site by a writer that wrote the company and they responded that it should not be used on chickens. Finally, I found the following and decided it wasnt worth the risk. I hope this helps with some of the questions people have. www.householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-b … d=19022002

This is in reference to the 5%!

I think you may be confusing people Cyn! PermaGuard Food Grade Fossil Shell Flour CONTAINS 79% silicon dioxide! It is the CRYSTALLINE SILICA you have to watch out for and MUST be 3% or less to be FOOD GRADE. The BAD DE (for pools) has a crystalline silica content of 85%. Thats the difference. What you had with silicon dioxide was probably in fact, food grade.

Sorry for the confusion! Yes, spatcher is correct. Below is a blurb from the Perma Guard website:

What's the difference between amorphous and crystalline silica? Amorphous silica is silica in it's natural occurring state. It is a trace mineral every mammal on the planet needs to live. It becomes crystalline when it is exposed to extreme heat through volcanic activity or commercial manufacturing means. The type of diatomaceous earth used in swimming pool, and other, filtration systems is crystalline silica. Crystalline silica is extremely dangerous when inhaled or ingested. It is not biodegradable

Sevin is a pesticide and you cannot do with Sevin Dust what you can with DE, like put it in their feed.

There is absolutely no comparison between DE and Sevin. Sevin is a poison, I would never use it near birds, or anything else edible, for that matter. The whole point of using something like food-grade DE is to avoid the use of pesticides and other chemicals near your birds. I know many here do use Sevin, I just don't want any equivalency made between the two.
