Myword!!! I can't believe how much more expensive Sevin is compared to food grade DE! Where I buy it, it is only $5.15 for a huge 5 lb. bag of DE and $17.05 for a 50 lb. bag. I also would only use food grade DE for my chickens, since you are what you eat.

If you eat the eggs from chicken that are given poisen, that poisen goes into your body, and your body accumulates it, until it clogs up the kidneys and liver, at which point your resistence to disease is very low, and that's when you start having problems with cancer, etc.

Yep, and the freshwater is usually used for the food grade as it is more pure.

Food Grade is just that. I take it myself as do others I know. Many for years. Perma-Guard Food Grade is also certified organic.

Swimming pool DE is toxic.

BTW, Sevin is a chemical. Insects become immune to chemicals. DE is a physical kill. Unless the insects morph into something else, they will always die from DE.

I went to local small town feed store, asked about it, he said sure, 14 bucks a 50 pund bag, I asked if food grade, he said, Ag grade and everybody uses it on animals. I was afraid to buy it. Now I know to check the bags thanks to this site. I ordered 10 pound bag food grade online and figure I will see what I think before checking out feed store version (the bag, before I buy it that is). Thanks for info.

The Permagard Fossil Shell Flour is fresh water DE and is safe to be used. The bag says FCC food grade. Unfortunately, i found recently that saying FCC Food grade is not cut and dry. I work with a filtration unit for industrial chemicals and we have been experimenting with DE as a filter media. The DE we have been using says FCC Food Grade on the bag. However when looking at the MSDS it says it is flux calcined DE. Bad to inhale and ingest. So what I am understanding is that this type of DE is considered "Food Grade" because it meets Food Chemical Codex specifications as far as impurities and that it is manufactured using good manufacturing practices. This type of DE that is labeled FCC Food Grade can be used to filter food products such as juices, wine, beer etc. It comes in contact with food so it must comply with FCC and GMP. The other type (fresh water) not flux calcined can be used in foods as a anti caking agent mixing with grain and other powdered ground up foods. So bottom line pay attention to what you are buying and if necessary look at the MSDS from the manufacturer.

I must be lucky in that my local feed co-op in NJ carries PET SAFE DE in small bags.
The only issue is that the DE is very powdery and gets everywhere, which I guess is good once its sprinkled in the bedding!
