DE (food grade?) good or bad

I am reading all the arguments and the passion that I am seeing, makes me wonder if all the involved members are really amateurs backyards chicken growers or others that maybe have some commercial interest in the all thing.....I wonder...

What kind of commercial intrest?? Pray tell.

The kind that pay a percentage from any sale....

A friend of mine placed a bunch of lice in a jar of it... Guess what? They didn't die. Take that, the info from vets and the fact I tried using it? It doesn't work and there are health risks. Sorry if you think I'm bashing anyone, 'cause that is not my intent.

I'm sorry if I've caused offense. I didn't mean to imply that you specifically were bashing people but now that I read the post I realize that sentence should have been separated into its own paragraph. Some users, however, have been doing so.

There are also health risks to baking. Flour dust in excess isn't good for you either but you don't see anyone advocating that you should avoid flour altogether. Everyone has the right to their own risk/benefit analysis. Please trust that others want to do what is best for themselves and their animals and have the reasoning capacity to arrive at valid conclusions.

Hey, no worries, no offense taken! Most do want the best for their animals, but sadly, many cannot figure our what's best. Truth be told, many posters would rather be told what to do thn to do a little research.

Some vets have written that DE is not safe... For me, that's all all I need to know. Then add to it that I actually tried it and it had zero effect on poultry lice kind of makes it a no brainer for me.

The EPA & FDA said the same. No economic interest here, just interest in the wellbeing of Gallo Gallo Domestics.

I've never been impressed by DE. Long before I had chickens, I bought a big bag of DE to use in my garden. I had absolutely no results with the exception of putting it around hosta's to keep away slugs. Anytime it rained or even if we had high humidity, I had to reapply around the hosta's as it wouldn't work after it got wet. Which makes me think that it won't work in other wet areas. Like the gut of a chicken.

As I understand it, DE is supposed to kill external bugs and internal worms because it's sharp and reportedly pierces the skin or external skeleton of any bug/worm, causing it to die. If that's truly the case, what does it do to the soft interior organs of the chicken and why would I want to do that to my hens?

And we know it can negatively impact lungs. That's about all we know for sure.

Seems to me that there's more unknown than known and little evidence of enough benefit to outweigh the potential dangers. Not to mention that chickens have done just fine for thousands of years without the stuff.

I have read DE and it doesn't seem 100% effective. So my question is then what have you guys used and had best results for deworming?
