A "Friend" who works at the local farm and garden store convinced me to foster a 3-4 month old Rhode Island Red rooster. He is starting to develop his spurs, they are just nubs now. I went through this with my previous rooster "BB". She said to use the Dr.Naylor Dehorning paste. Has anyone heard of this or even better done this? It is Calcium Hydroxide and Sodium Hydroxide..
Thanks for your help BYCer's

I just got a mature rooster from my local feed store guy. He's a 2 year old mutt and had about 1 1/2 to 2" spurs. Before sticking him into my pet carrier, he took a saw blade (without the saw) and sawed them down to about 1/2 to 3/4" nub. They bled a little but didn't seem to bother him a bit. If the spurs are that easy to deal with, would you really need to use chemicals?

I guess the real question is why do you want them gone? I probably won't despur this rooster again unless he starts damaging the hens. If he comes after me, he won't remain in the flock long.

I hear what you are saying, My last roo tore a hole in the side of one of my hens with his spurs and he was always smacking my wife and myself when we weren't looking. I used to grind down his spurs with a dremmel tool, my wife would wrap him in a towel and we would take about 3 minutes on each side. The rep at the store made it sound so easy, just dab some on and they will never grow. I only get one chance to do this now when he is young. I really like having a rooster around to protect the hens and remind me it is time to get up and go to work.
