We were getting to the bottom third of a bag of Layena, and hubby scooped out a little dead bird! Blech! He whipped it into the field before I could see it, he said it wasn't totally decayed but not fresh either. The bag was kept in the garage, not sealed. I highly doubt a bird flew in the open bag and croaked one day. There's a Purina plant about 30 miles from here which makes me think it doesn't take too long for a bag to get from there to the store to my house. With a bird in it.

I seriously hope it didn't have anything nasty to infect my flock. Needless to say, I'll be searching for new feed today.

I would throw away the bag of feed and get another. It probably was an isolated case and if hubby hadnt threw away the bird, you could have brought the bag of feed back to the dealer and they should at least give you a free bag for your trouble and wanting to keep you as a customer.

I had one in my Layena feed, a small field mice on the bottom and it was dried out. So I gave the bag back to my dealer and he gave me two free bags of Layena for my trouble. I would not change feeds just because they had a small error but if I find a human hand in it, that would be the other matter.

I would not change feeds either.

Things happen, I'm sure that if you ask you'll not find it's a common occurrence, and if you aren't sure the bird was already in the feed, being in a feed bag it would've been crushed and flat by feed stacking, moving, restacking, moving, etc, maybe your husband would know if it was.

I would also let the dealer know. Things happen. Unless your birds are kept inside and never let out, they are exposed to all kinds of different "undesirable" stuff everyday.

I got sweet feed for the horses at the mill, and it had 2 rats in it! That freaked me out... I stuck the scoop in to get grain out and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't go down through the grain. So I scooped up what I could, and there it was

I threw the bag away

Another time I reached in a bag of treats, and came back with a mouse - he was still alive

I'm not sure which one of us was more suprised

Yep things do happen, i couldnt imagine opening a bag of treats and finding a live mouse inside i bet it survived by eating the treats.

My birds were on Layena for a while. one day i walked outside to check on them and the feeder was filled with fly larvae.

Hubby worked briefly at a Purina plant here in town (not FOR Purina) and the things he saw would make your skin crawl.

I wouldn't throw the feed or the bird away. I'd bring'em both back to the store and get my money.

I think I'm going to try the feed from Nutzy Mutz and Crazy Cats in Madison. They carry Frank Organic. Any Madisonians here who use it?
