Help please.

I have 2 1/2 week old chicks that were hatched by Momma,
I found one of them dead in the cage today with ants in its head....IT WAS SO AWEFUL!! Now another one seems listless with its wings drooping as if it can't hold them up. I'm in Florida and it's hot, they also may have gotten some moldy feed after a rain the other day. I thought I got it out of the grass but there still may have been some left.

There is no respiratory symtoms and the others seem fine. I feel just aweful.

Should I remove this chick from momma and the others? Will it freak out to be alone?

I've been giving them medicated chick start.

Please help.

Thanks

I'd bring it in the house (cooler) and try getting it to eat crushed up hard boiled eggs with a little unpasteurized yogurt mixed in (not much, might not eat it at all).

Make sure it is drinking. If not, use an eyedropper (gently).

don't pour water down the throat..give by drops on beak..

describe the droppings..color and consistency.

how many chickens do you have?
the chick may have had cocci, since you say there on the ground and weather is ho, humid and rainy..

do clean up any feed..

the chick will be stressed to be alone..
can you confine Mamma and chick inside?
the Mamma could have cocci too..
check the droppings..
are they runny? have blood? any other odd color?

if they have cocci, you'll need Sulmet liquid..you'll find it at most farm/feed/livestock stores..
not expensive..directions on bottle.

Oh my! Thank you for your help....

I brought the chick in and put it in a box, gave it water and yogurt with the egg in it. I've tried dipping the tip of it's beak in the water and he doesn't seem to want to drink.

It is so listless and just sits under the light kinda spread out. It cheeps every once and a while.

I haven't seen it's droppings since it hasn't had any since early this am.

Momma and the other babies are out in the coop still, I have moved them to a different spot, cleaned up any feed and droppings and checked the droopings of the others. There is some runny brown poo and other regular droppings.

I don't reallly have a place in the house big enough for momma and the other 9 chicks. Right now the sick chick is in a box in our school room with us.

It seems to like to be held even though the light in the box has the temp at around 85.

When I went out to the coop early this am the chick was all by it's self and momma and the others were at the other end of cage.

As I'm typing the chick started peeping, I put some water on it's beak with my finger and it seemed to swallow a little more....

Then it just poo'd the droppings are clear and very liquid with a little white in it.

I will go inspect the new area where momma and the other peeps are to see the droppings.

Chick is really starting to peep and just jumped in the box...is it calling Momma?

Oh this doesn't look good....it's laying down now with it's head flat out on the paper towel.....breathing seems labored...

Any ideas???????

Never mind.....the baby just died.
