Hey all. Just had a couple questions. We lost our first chick today, a 5 day old CX. I wondered if anyone would know why? When I first saw him, he was laying flat directly under the heat lamp. I thought it odd because all the rest kinda scatter around, with none laying directly under it. The temp was about 94 where he was. I made a loud noise and everyone but him ran away, so I grabbed him up. I noticed he was extremely hot.He took plenty of drinks of sugar water, but didn't want to open his eyes much. We kept giving him water and a little food. After a while he started chirping and perking up, but then went back to sleep. He then started to vomit a little bit and struggle to breathe. He got over that, pooped a completely clear poop, then died.

Any ideas? Sorry if that's depressing. We kind of expected to lose one, but it's still sad to see them go.

Have one other starting to do the same thing. Both are smaller that the rest, so I wondered. I also noticed that some of my chicks are eating pine shavings? The one who isn't looking good now had a swollen crop? I rubbed it and made sure he was drinking water, that seemed to help. I wonder if the shavings could be blocking them up?

I never use pine shavings for that very reason when raising chicks.
