I live in North Bangor NY. It is around 0 degrees often . My chickens are kept in the coop unless it is around 32 degees. This morning I found a dead chicken on the coop floor. No signs of trauma or physical injury. What should I look for in the coop or the other chickens. I keep the lay mash and water topped off at all times.

Chickens just drop dead sometimes in my experience. Apart from doing a necropsy I've never figured out what happened. I suspect heart attacks or something along those lines.

Sorry to read that your chicken died unexpectedly. You can send her off for necropsy to Cornell but they are rather expensive. The last time I checked it was $125.
Do you have a run available to them? Mine go out in temperatures much lower than 32F. I leave it up to them if they want to go out or stay in but I have a winterized run.

So sorry about your chicken. Have you felt her to see if she is in good flesh? Check closely for external parasites. You could open her up yourself and post pictures here. If another chicken passes I would definitely send her off to a veterinary diagnostic lab for a necropsy.
