Dead Chickens

Hey just asking for help in what might have happened to my friends pullets. He move them to the pen he raised them in that was sitting on grass while he was repairing/adding on to their big boy chicken coop. They had plenty of grass to scratch in while he was working. He went in the house for about an hour and came back out and all 7 of his pullets were dead. He looked around and didn't see any ants or bugs and he had not sprayed anything on the grass. What could have killed all 7 in less than an hour? We are stumped. This was during the day time not at night. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm sorry for your loss!
Were there any signs of predators, even a bite on their necks that seem concealed could be a weasel, but during the daytime it's not that likely. How old were they?
Did they have any symptoms of sickness, not that that would make sense for why they all died right there and then. To me it seems like a poison. Maybe a poisonous plant?

Could a dog have got into the pen? Was it an open top pen?
Did their feathers look wet at all?
A dog would kill them and leave them intact but maybe slobbered on, depending on the dog.

Was it hot that day?
Did they have shade?
Did they have water?
Had the lawn just been treated with something?
How old were these chickens?
Were the bodies bloody or torn up?
