dead chicks , pecking please help

Don't know about EE's in general, but mine was always very docile and sweet as a chick. She's still very calm now, but can be a stinker!

I'm having the same issue as you. 50 sq. ft brooder pen for 40 3-week olds. Red bulbs, temperature is just right, plenty of room for them to cool off, adequate feed & water available. Mostly pecking on the back, but none has gotten to the point of death or serious injury. The Blue Kote spray on the wound seems to stop it. Most of the aggressors are Barred Rock pullets. When you have that many chicks, it's hard to pin-point who the bad guys(or girls) are. They key is to check on them every few hours, so if someone is getting pecked, you can nip it in the bud before it becomes critical.

Confined housing (Brooders are basically confined housing for a certain period of time).

1-11 weeks, Bantams 1.5, Light 2.5, and 1-8 weeks Heavy 2.5 square feet per bird.

As the birds grow the picking will increase as they are placed under additional stress due to crowding.

So what starts out fine may become a problem.

I had a brooding pen of slightly more than 28 square feet last spring and only used it for 3 weeks brooding a 20 bird mixed light/heavy flock. By the end of the third week they weren't happy campers. So they they got introduced to their big girl coop but not their run.

Hi guys, well it's wednesday, I seperated the red sex links from the pack and havent had anynore kills. I also read somewhere that they tend to pieck at anything red, and the little guys are really read. Thank you all for your help.
