So my pekin went broody, she has been sitting on eggs since the end of May. This afternoon I found an egg, about 10 feet out of the nest cracked open with a little dead duckling laying in it. What could have done/caused this to happen? All of the other eggs are still in the nest like normal and she is still sitting on them.

There are some unknowable things with hatching. There may have been a problem with the duckling.

But, the duck herself may not know what to do when they hatch, so you need to keep watch somehow. If you get concerned that she may be killing the ducklings, they will need to finish incubating somewhere else (an incubator).

Let's hope there was just a problem with the duckling and it was not viable. But I would decide how to finish incubating the eggs - or be there to move them into a brooder as soon as they hatch.
