This morning I went out to feed my girls & one of my hens was standing in her nest box. I can't tell if she laid an egg or was trying to. There were 2 other eggs in the box (6 hens/2 nesting boxes ratio) and everything in the box was covered in blood. I tried to coax her out of the box, but she wouldn't move. I had to get my breakfast, so I went back to check on her a little while later & she was dead next to the box. I checked her over & didn't see any other injuries. It appears the blood is from her backside. Yesterday she was completely normal. All of the other chickens are acting normal. The only thing ordinary is that a few days ago my flock wandered out of our field & down by the creek bed. They normally don't go down there & they stayed there pretty much all afternoon. Could she have gotten into something?
I've deal with prolapse & cocci before so I know what to look for with those & they don't really seem to fit. Any idea appreciated. Thank you!
