i just lost my beloved 3 year old golden-sex link fi-fi. i live in portland and the weather has been great, as in the 70's to low 80's but on tuesday it shot up to 99 degrees. i had that day off and i hung outside, like usual, with the hens all day long. i gave them lots of cool water, cold grapes and cold raspberries in addition to lots of shady spots and a nice cool spot for dust bathing. also, they have full access to the garage. they seemed perfectly fine that night and the next morning when i let them out to go to work early in the AM they were their usual selves. when we got home that day, we found fi-fi dead. no signs of struggle, just laying their peacefully. i am devastated as she was young and always very healthy and energetic and never stopped begging for treats. her laying had tapered off some though. anyone know what might have happened?
thank you for any help.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the loss of fi-fi :hugs You might try posting in the Diseases forum about her symptoms etc www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures for help in figuring out what she had. Sex links are really prone to reproductive/ egg laying problems it seems, and don't have the life span of other breeds.

Welcome to BYC! I'm sorry about the loss of fi-fi. Kelsie2290 has given you a good link to look into. This is the place to be when you own chickens. Good luck with the rest of your flock.

Welcome to BYC. Although 3 is relatively young for many breeds, the sex links tend to develop reproductive tract problems and die sooner than some others. I seriously doubt that it was anything contagious.

Alright

Sorry about fi-fi. I did not know sex-links had issues either. I have a black-sex link 4-5 weeks old who is the sweetest chick. While I'm sorry you had to find out like this, I'm glad you posted about it. So much for hybrid vigor! :(
