Are you saying that birds who are exposed and do not come down with
symptoms are resistant, not carriers?
Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. I have bred a line of RI Red Bantams for over 25 years. From the beginning I have strictly culled a the first sign of any illness [including Marek's] other than Coccidiosis. At this point it has been years since I have had a sick bird. This is because I have bred for disease resistance along with other desirable traits.
Other than Cocci I don't medicate anything. I'm not a fanatic about cleanliness in the chicken coop & have certainly never disinfected a coop as some here advocate. I attribute my lack of disease to my breeding program.
I started doing this after reading Fred Jeffery's book on chicken diseases. Jeffery advocated breeding for disease resistance & said his medicine cabinet contained only Louse Powder, a Coccidiostat & a Hatchet: that's all mine contains.
No question that this is hard at first & it's kind of counter intuitive but it does pay off. Last year I raised over 450 chicks & lost just one-it got crushed in the brooder.
This year so far I have lost only one bird-to a Possum. He won't get a second one. I guess my medicine cabinet also contains a 22 rifle.
Well I am inclined to believe you and did cull the others but can't get myself to cull this one. I am sure I will question this decision one day but will cross that bridge then. I have decided to vaccinate my chicks from here on
