dealing with Mareks yet again looking for additional treatments / info

Me and Nan are praying for you Honey, you hang in there.

Not to threadjack but our boy Tony is sick, got himself a real bad cold (again). So if you all could just pray for our rooster Tony we'd sure be appreciative. We've got him resting in the hutch inside and I make him his favorite Ramen Noodles but it looks kinda bleak...

I ordered chicks form cackle hatchery and was told tha the vaccine ins really hard on day old chick and since I was ordering exoctcs to NOT vaccinate.

Any how, were did you get the vaccine and how much did it cost. Did you have to get enough for 100 chicens or not ??

I would like to vaccinate tha ones coming and a few I have in a brodder in the house.

I finally had to move the ones from the nursury as both my wild hens have chicks now and they HAVE to be in their to raise them. Other wise they will take them all out and "teach" them to forage in the pastures and I am afraid they will lose a few along the way.

Are you saying that birds who are exposed and do not come down with
symptoms are resistant, not carriers?

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. I have bred a line of RI Red Bantams for over 25 years. From the beginning I have strictly culled a the first sign of any illness [including Marek's] other than Coccidiosis. At this point it has been years since I have had a sick bird. This is because I have bred for disease resistance along with other desirable traits.
Other than Cocci I don't medicate anything. I'm not a fanatic about cleanliness in the chicken coop & have certainly never disinfected a coop as some here advocate. I attribute my lack of disease to my breeding program.
I started doing this after reading Fred Jeffery's book on chicken diseases. Jeffery advocated breeding for disease resistance & said his medicine cabinet contained only Louse Powder, a Coccidiostat & a Hatchet: that's all mine contains.
No question that this is hard at first & it's kind of counter intuitive but it does pay off. Last year I raised over 450 chicks & lost just one-it got crushed in the brooder.
This year so far I have lost only one bird-to a Possum. He won't get a second one. I guess my medicine cabinet also contains a 22 rifle.

Well I am in the vets looks like both she probably is fighting mareks and has a leg injury they are draining the joint now and testing for infection I think if she can get over the leg thing that she could survive the mareks at least that is what I am hoping. She is such a good bird I know this trip will put me farther into debt but don't care at least they take payments.

Well I am inclined to believe you and did cull the others but can't get myself to cull this one. I am sure I will question this decision one day but will cross that bridge then. I have decided to vaccinate my chicks from here on
