Dear chicken know-it-alls,

Yeah, well, I DO know it all, but this I why I never share any useful information! No one ever appreciates my to the point, bluntly stated facts, preferring lots of little

so you know it's tongue in cheek. Sort of.

Amen Brutha! When you are newer to this or not totally into showing or things - people can be that way i think - when some jsut want to have fun with chickens!

There should be room for everyone on this site - those who want to do serious SOP breeding and those who want a flock of fun, who cares what they are egg layers. I have both, and am totally happy.
By the way, the late great Ralph Sturgeon wrote a book called "Start Where You Are with What You Have"; if he can advise that, who can argue??

ha ha ha. I'm not a big fan of the smiley's either, and to the point answers are just fine. But there's a middle ground. It's called being polite!

I will say as I've learned some of the kindest most informative answers have been from those with, say, 45,000 posts, or those who are the presidents of their breed clubs. And I've appreciated it.

Totally off topic, but I picked up this BEAUTIFUL purebred Ameraucana at the feed store the other day for $5. I'm not sure who the breeder is but it's someone good. She has the prettiest green legs, and lays 3 eggs a day! Most of them are double yolkers. They're the prettiest creamy brown color. She's a cool black and white striped pattern, which is how I know she's purebred. I feel really lucky.

I'm just having fun here, not trying to start a war. I love my hatchery birds. I love my breeder birds. I've paid $1 for some. $100 for others. When it's time to fill the egg carton, I'm sure glad to have some production girls. When I'm looking to impress someone with egg colors, I'm glad I have the breeder stock.

I still pick up a leghorn, a production red, and an EE at the feed store every spring just to have some young layers in the flock. In addition to whatever money I blow, I mean invest, on hatching eggs.

I've learned a ton here, and I recommend this site to folks probably 5 times a week.
