Death in the chicken run

Last night, my daughter invited kids over from school for the first time. Halfway through dinner, nonchalantly they commented that the chicken run had "insides of chicken". Trying not to panic, I went out and investigated. The good news is that it was clearly only one bird that was killed, but WHOA did somebody make a good meal of him. There were wings left, and feet, a gizzard and a few loops of intestine. I also saw one small blob of lung. That's *IT*

It was gross so I'll just link to it:

Edit: There's a gross looking thing in the photo that is hard to identify, so I wanted to say that it's a part of a sunflower head caked with mud.

PROBABLY unrelated, I had another shock when I got to the chicken run. Either a bird had flown to the top of the run's fence to roost or perhaps the tree overhanging it, or a large bird had grabbed it and took it to the tree to eat, I don't know. Anyway, while I was looking at the remains, suddenly a bird seemed to FALL out of nowhere. I'm inclined to think it wasn't part of the attack because none of the chickens in the run were panicking, but maybe they're just too stupid to notice?

Edit: My husband is on a business trip until tonight and I'm alone with four small kids so I haven't done a head count yet.

So sorry for your loss !!!!!

I can only imagine how gross it was ( i cant look at the pic )

:aww :aww :aww :aww

I just remembered that dh let the birds out into the run *before* dawn yesterday. It still may have been an attack in the dark.

sounds like coon to me. I am always nervous this time of the year as I have to open my coop before dawn as I have to leave for work before first light.
