her livers were the only thing that looked normal. it almost seems more like a scleroderma.. but I have no idea if this is something chickens get. the excess fat, changes in the organs and the odd connective tissues were the biggest symptoms.

I am just about to necropsy another.... my buckeye who broke an egg internally. treatment did not work and she died overnight. I need to know if there was anything else wrong. ..... this is getting hard to deal with....

Wow. First off, that was a great necropsy. I can see that the webbing made it difficult to get anything out. I guess she did have scleroderma. Can't do anything about that.

That egg yolk shouldn't be where it is, it probably couldn't travel, so it developed right there. I'm sorry you lost your hen. It doesn't look like anything you could have done.

I thought it was a bit odd to have full sized yolks in the cavity. I can do with some good luck now. I seem to get all the oddities.... I did not take pics of my latest who died of EYP. I opened her just to be sure. She was full of yellow guck..... poor soul......

The yolk may have been the start of Internal laying. If that's what it is, it's an amazing picture. That narrowing of the fallopian tubes may be one cause of internal laying since there's no where for the yolk to go.

No suggestions on what it might have been, but I feel for you, my duck uprubtly died and it was awful!

They have a terrible way of doing that!! Learning experience at least. I do find doing the necropsies to be informative.

Sorry, but it's not scleroderma in your chicken. I'm a bit of an expert on the subject. The first thing is weight loss, which didnt happen to your hen...she wouldve died quickly from the weight loss. After the fat is gone, the next thing that sclerodema works on is muscles. The muscles become weaker and weaker where a person cant lift their arms and need a cane or walker to assist in walking. Swallowing food is nearly impossible, causes a person to turn to a high fat, high protein diet in power milkshakes, "boost," "ensure," high carb foods that are easy to swallow or blended. Citrus and acidic foods are out. Acid reflux is a BIG problem. Steroids, probiotics, prescription antacids, prescription pain meds, etc....are part of the diet to treat the symptoms...there is no cure.
