Debating starting new hatchery

onthespot, I understand what you are saying but not sure I completely agree with it. As an example. I pre purchased three birds for $165. and got burned in the deal so not a thing but a headache for that money. (A lot in a little area is at greater risk of bad things happening)in another case I invested $150 in a total of 40 eggs shipped and a pair of birds. from that I have a pair of chickens, the hen is already laying fertile eggs. Some 21 eggs are now 25 and rising and of those it looks like I am on track to have 12 more chicks in the next week or so. In addition I have 2 other chicks that are a month old. basically spreading out the risk so that any one bad event is not such a big hit. Big money can also mean big losses. It is a two edged sword. It is harder work and often can be more expensive to produce the higher cost animals. In fact in many cases the cost of producing a champion is so high that you will never really have a chance of recovering it. it is through the sales of hundreds of less than champion birds that a breeder is able to keep going.
There is a balance in there somewhere.

I had AN Asil about 5 years ago, he was one of my favorite roos. Back then we raised game chickens, Law Greys, Sweaters , minor blues and kelso's to name a few. I miss those birds.
