decapitated hen

The only chickens that I have ever seen a hawk fly off with have been immatures. Even an adult redtail only weighs a couple of pounds. Other hawks are far smaller.

Male redtails weigh 1.5 to 3 #, females up to 4.5 # - information that came up on a search indicates that they can carry up to one third of their body weight.

WE had an immature female Coopers hawk enter our barn last fall and kill an eight pound white leghorn/ Delaware cross rooster, Popcorn. There was a tremendous fight, there was stuff and feathers thrown everywhere. The hawk weighed five pounds anyway, she was huge. We caught her (she would not leave our barn), so that's how we were able to get the specifics. Why she chose to take on a big rooster like that is anyone's guess, though, knowing our roosters, I'm sure he made himself available as a target, to try to save the hens. The hawk also killed our favorite and most beautiful senior rooster Dazzle. Again, i am sure he targeted himself.

Just an example of how bold the hawks can be. We released the hawk several miles away, but I learned later that we should have released her at least fifty miles away. WE believe she returned but did not have enough courage to come close to the flock when she came back. Thank God.

That's what I was going to say....don't underestimate the hawk's abilities and yes they have swooped down and grabbed a full grown barred rock right in front of me and took off with it!!!! We have "psycho" hawks around here they don't discriminate !!!
