December Hatch-A-Long 2014

Hello. I put 20 ancona duck eggs in the incubator on the 21st. My incubator likes to drop to 97ish at night, so I'm thinking we may have slow progress but hoping for the best!
Welcome and good luck with your eggs! :) Don't forget duckling pics when they hatch

All 21 of the eggs I set got fried. My DD attempted to adjust the temp (instead of covering/uncovering the windows) and the temp was up to 110!!! I opened a couple of them and all of them were at day 7 development, which is where they should have been

We went from being in the 20's during the night to the upper 40's. Since we only heat our home with a wood burning stove and I have a still air incubator getting the temp stable is a struggle BUT I did have it perfect as long as you don't touch the thermostat.

Thankfully I'm still getting six eggs a day from my girls so I have about 15 to put back in the incubator.

I'm so sorry to hear that!

But at least your faithful little layers can save the day for you. I hope it goes better for you next round! My kids like to 'help' too. I'm slowly learning things like I need to duct tape the lid shut during lockdown or they WILL open it, etc...

Oh man that's terrible. Sorry that happened. 15 more to put in is awesome though, are you gonna set them today? I keep getting worried I'll wake up to a high temp. I live in AZ and it's still not that cold for it being November so during the day I have no air or heat on but at night we turn the heat on and I'm so afraid it's gonna cause the incubator to spike but so far it hasnt. Hope the next 15 fair better for you!

haha, I've given my kids little tasks to help me but they are absolutely not allowed to open the incubator or touch the temp. Mostly I have them look in and tell me what it's reading and they are ok with that task. They are so excited though.

DD (darlin' daughter) is 18 but has several challenges. She had brain surgery last summer for Chiari Malformation Type 1. She also has Classic and Complex (mimics stroke symptoms) migraines and the medication to treat that causes brain fog and memory issues (just two things that she deals with). She didn't know that in order to adjust the temp she needed to take off or put on the tea towels over the windows. She knows now though.

She feels really bad. I blamed it on a faulty thermometer and told her I'll handle the incubator from now on.

We might have a few more than 15 depending on how many they lay today. I will set them tonight.

I can completely understand...and you don't want her to disengage when she is so interested in them! Good of you to chalk it up to the thermometer & save her heart!

My daughter is completely embarassed...I would love for her to be more intererested. I just bought the classroom pack by Brinsea because I thought that if she could watch the development closer that she would become a stakeholder. No such luck! 15 is a tough age!

positive thinking... I need to start saying when all 12 of mine hatch instead of I hope at least 1 hatches!

Exactly! Pessimism makes me second guess EVERYTHING I do or do not do with incubating. Which ends up in bad decisions or mistakes being made that would've never come up otherwise and I will be honest... I don't need any help making mistakes!
