)People who quit "cold turkey" can be at risk of too-slow heartbeats overnight. Those are the people who have a stroke and never wake up.

If you have a cardiologist (most smokers do, eventually!), get a checkup and a prescription for nicotine replacement therapy. If you have no doctor at all, use your county health department.

Nicotine addiction is for real! Its not just an attitude adjustment. Its not laziness or weakness or childish to be addicted to nicotine, its a real chemical dependence. In normal bodies, a neurotransmitting chemical called acetylcholine sets your heart rate, your blood pressure, controls your fluid and electrolyte balance. But nicotine replaces that over time, so the body has "receptors" to the nicotine instead of acetylcholine. If a smoker suddenly holds out on the nicotine, and there's no way the body can use acetylcholine, then there's no regulation. The heartrates go down into the 30's while asleep, and that leads to blood clotting, which clogs important things like the heart and the brain.

That's why its important to get a little medical help to quit smoking. Sure, some people just quit and they're fine. I'm speaking from the perspective of the people who quit cold turkey and stroked. I've taken care of sooooo many! Ewwww, sad, I know, but true.

Besides, I see no good reason to suffer withdrawal. Isn't there enough suffering going on in the world? Why do we need any more suffering? The lifestyle change is hard enough, even though its a beautiful change in the end.

I used Chantix and quit for 21/2 years, the Chantix made cigs smell and taste SO FRICKING FOUL

it made it easy, the 7th day, I lit a smoke after dinner, took 2 puffs and put it out, not to smoke againg for 21/2 years, and I had smoked 2-3 packs a day for 38 yrs. I started again this past summer for about 2 months, got a bronchial infection was sick for 3 weeks and my dr said it was because of "my smoking history", well I got Chantix again and it was super easy to quit a second time. I don't know how expensive cigs are where you're at, here a carton about $100, so I rolled my own with a little filter machine and last spring a pound of tobacco went from $30 to $100, so much for saving $$. Anyway the reason I mention the cost is if you think of what cigs cost as apposed to what Chantix costs, I've been told for a months supply about $120, in the long run that's even cheaper than smoking, even at $4 a pack which they are more and I sure smoked more than a pack, Chantix is cheaper. Now I've got a friend that her husband had the same reaction to Chantix that I did, she didn't and it wasn't as easy for her. OH I got sugar free dum-dum lollipops to keep my mouth and my hands busy and that helped too. I've got friend's that still smoke and I can't even stand to have them in my cabin, they smell like ashtrays.

The patch made my heart 'flutter' quitting cold turkey just made me feel better. I don't understand that. Might it have to do more with age? I have a fast heart rate 90bpm. Pull up a chair and advise please

I'm glad you posted this. I know a lot of people who did quit cold turkey but only after countless failed attempts and a lot of unnecessary suffering. It can be done but your odds are MUCH lower.


The gum worked so well for me because it satisfied the physical craving to smoke (sorta). I was then able to cut the pieces up into smaller pieces and eliminate my nicotine addiction and my own pace.​

Did you smoke and use the patch at the same time? That will make the heart do strange things. You may also just have been feeling withdrawal and anxiety, not an actual side effect of the patch.
 
Didn't do both. My left arm where the patch was started hurting..aching a little, just noticeable. My Dr. at the time told me to quit the patch and start smoking again. Didn't tell me why..

So I did as was advised. I wonder if the patch backing has latex? I am allergic to latex, may have been the issue, but I don't know. The last time cold turkey, and I felt fine.
