You are CRAZY! I hated the patch!

My three pieces of advice came from my DD's pediatrician when he was encouraging me to quit (it was the fourth time I tried but it stuck).
1) The physical craving for a cigarette only lasts for 15 seconds, if you can count to 15 slowly every time a craving hits, you can ride it out.
2) Your lungs start the healing process just 24 hours after your last cigarette so just remember that if you give in you have to wait 24 hours to start healing again. Cigarettes paralyze the cilia in your lungs that move crud out of your airways.
3) If the first 2 fail, try to keep your cigarettes to 5 or less a day (This is what worked for me while I kept 1 and 2 in mind). After a few months you will lose the physical addiction for cigarettes. This doesn't take care of the psychological addiction but it sure was easier for me to quit once I broke the physical addiction. I kept it to 3 or less a day and only gave in when I really couldn't stand it any longer. After that every time I craved a cigarette I just counted to 15 while breathing deeply with my now healthier lungs!

It's been 28 years since I quit and every once in a blue moon I get a very fleeting craving for a cigarette but I just laugh now. It feels good to be able to laugh at my now distant bad habit.

Do what works for you! Now with nicorette and hypnosis etc. having such great success, I don't see any reason for you to go it alone!

The patches come in a few different doses. The dose is prescribed by body weight/height/age/other meds/ (and renal clearance, etc if available). Its not really a lot of medical attention, but I recommend getting a doctor for it. What's a doctor's appointment cost compared to the cost of cigarettes over the next year?

I'm really rootin' for ya too!

Are you addicted to the patch now?!?!

SunnyDawn Thanks for that advice. If it gets bad I may give in and try that for a week or so. I do want to quit though!! I know I can if I can get over DH continuing to smoke in front of me...that's the hurdle!

I have a Dr friend that may give me a freebie pass on this one. I can't afford to pay anything right now. I am otherwise a very healthy 33 yr old. I just worry about my heartrate being as high as it is, probably FROM smoking. I've gotten up to a pack and a half a day again..

Stresses of unemployment...GRR! But, if I can quit now when things are rough I know I can STAY QUIT and won't have any luxury of excuses down the line for starting back if the thought ever crossed my mind!

I quit many years ago and it was so hard. My two best tips that worked for me are:

NO don't say maybe, I might, Hmmm if you even start to think of lighting up say NO NO NO

And the second one helped alot. Take in a deeeeep breath. When you can't take any more in--take more anyway. Do that a few times and you get that ciggy high and the ciggy burn.

You know, I still do that...

Same with Chanitx. Not just vivid; I dreamed that I had smoked, and woke up crying, but really vivid and crazy dreams. But you can do it! You are teaching your unwilling brain a new way to do things. And it will adjust! And if you look at it from a really twisted angle (yeah, I live here!) then the dreams are funny! But whatever shape you are in, either physically or mentally, IT IS WORTH IT! THERE IS NO TIME IN YOUR LIFE THAT YOU WILL BE PROUDER OF YOURSELF! Only you will recognise the accomplishment, but it is yours, and take it to your grave! FYI-Today is 9 months and 3 days for me! You are probably thinking "great, I will be glad when I can say that", but no one understands the accomlpishment but me. I never thought I would be able to, but WOW! 9 MONTHS AND 3 DAYS! YEAH FOR ME and one day, you too! Let me know, and I'll shout it from the rooftop with mine!
