Well, after lots of thought and consultation, I've decided to get 2 pullets and 2 chicks.
The pullets will go outside right away in the temp large pet carrier someone gave me today, surrounded by a temp run made from the 2x8s and chicken wire someone else gave me.
The chicks will be in the house at night in a big box holding the small igloo doghouse someone else gave me today, and out on our sheltered deck during the day with a roost and what-not.
I decided to do it this way so we'd have eggs and the fun of raising chicks with help from our 5 yr old grandbaby.
In Spring we'll build a permanent coop/run from our greenhouse parts.
thanks to everyone who gave advice and shared knowledge. When we get the girls I'll try to post pics... I don't think you can scan a chicken.
