I now have 3 friends with chickens. And each of them have asked me if I was ever going to have them.

Well, I have 2 acres now. I'm growing a garden! And, I'm getting "earthy" as one of my best friends put it -- She is a Back Yard Chicken person (is that how you say it?).

So I'm checking it out. I'm not sure if I can do this. Not because I couldn't but because I have never been that kind of person. I mean, who me? ME?

According to the county, I can have 4 chickens. I'd rather like to have all females. Don't need the rooster tho as bad as I am at waking up, maybe I should consider that?

Anyway, here I am. In the research process. This site seems to be the best place for me to see what I'd be getting myself into and whether I'd be willing to do it.

About me? About 1 acre is full of lawn, buildings, fruit trees and garden. Of that about 1/3 of acre is lawn. I've started my own bee garden, and trying really really hard to never ever use chemicals again. I have a LOT of moles though. Figured hmmm. Could chickens actually help me out with all those grubs? Or do they want their food above ground?

Anyway, moles are my only problem. I'd even put up with that except those tunnels are ankle breakers.

Never really introduced myself like this.

Thank you all for being here and providing all of this information! I look forward to the journey no matter what I decide!

The biggest + in your situation for having chickens is being able to eliminate pesticide use in the garden. I used to loose 1/2 my garden to grasshoppers and once I got chickens, I finally had a decent harvest.

Chickens are also great for speeding up the breakdown of compost, you can feed them just about any waste you produce and the eggs aren't too bad either.

YES get chickens they are not picky eaters they eat grubs and if they see a mole they may be brave enough to kill it by picking it to death. also their cool pets and they eat many bugs. get them you won't regret it and don't get a rooster because you should have more females so he can mount and he won't make your the hens bald and hurt them by mounting only three hens to much.

Welcome to BYC! Chickens will scratch the ground up and eat grubs. Sounds like you might have a good place to free range your chickens (dependent upon the predator situation in your area). You always want to provide as efficient predator protection as possible for your flock. I would advise you to peruse the Predator and Pests section of the Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center/tag/predators-and-pests/ as well as the rest of the Learning Center. Raising chickens is an incredibly rewarding pursuit, but it does require some effort on the part of the chicken owner.

Start with the Learning Center, read through the articles and see what you think. I've been keeping chickens for years and I cannot imagine my life without them any more. They are great pets! Chicken keeping has it's ups and downs and good and not-so-good moments, but all-in-all it's a wonderful hobby and nothing beats those fresh eggs from your own hens!

On the moles, my chickens ignored them and vice versa. For above ground pests chickens are great though!

Enjoy the site!

Most people don't know just how much fun chickens really are to keep. They can be very affectionate, personable, they are playful and interesting to watch and they make wonderful pets. You won't regret keeping them. If you get full grown chickens, you will have to work with them to friendly them up to you. But once they do, they will stalk you for ever for the lovin and the goodies.

Good luck on this new journey and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Yes, chickens, who may not look as cuddly and sweet as say a cat, can be affectionate, friendly, curious, lap hogs, interesting and even playful!!!
