Hi all. I REALLY don’t know where to post this. But this forum seems to be where the question “Where is a vet who can decrow my rooster?” pops up most.

No, I’m not looking to surgically decrow my rooster. Like most folks I have my opinions about that — but right now I’m neither voicing nor seeking opinion.

I am however looking for the answer to the question. Or rather a similar one: where can I call/write to find out if the surgery is outlawed in a state?

I read a post where someone said their state has banned the surgery. My own state, California, is frustratingly opaque on the subject — or I’m not looking in the right place.

if you know your state (or even county) has enacted a law regarding decrowing, how did you find out? What agency has jurisdiction? Any facts you have would be much appreciated. I’m stuck and not even sure where to start my research!

It's actually a great question with so many folks looking at crow collars and sterilization or hormone implants as means of reducing crowing these days.. as you state without judgement WHY the question is being asked in the first place or giving an opinion on the subject.. as most folks doing this stiff are trying to "hide" a rooster and I'm anti loop hole.

Please let met clarify.. we are taking about crowing and not toe nail.. correct?? One link addresses both, I didn't verify when last updated etc..

Here's a couple resources I found that might be useful.. and very informative to say the least..

https://www.shouselaw.com/ca/blog/a...e procedure where,of living in public housing.

As far as can I see.. things like what you are questioning should be referred to your COUNTY animals control or department of agriculture also code enforcement.. would be the top three places I would start looking for information.. when you find the law as it is written, post and let us help decipher it!

If you get anywhere.. consider writing an article to include the information! :fl

Yes, the surgery in question is definitely rooster decrowing (I thought cat declawing had similar rules, but it’s very different).

It surprised me how often decrowing came up as a question here. Not all the time, but more than I’d realized. And it was very difficult to give an accurate answer of whether it is legal in my state. From there I started wondering which states regulate decrowing. And now I really want to know — not just which states, but the actual codes.

County animal control.... good one. I think I’ll start with a more suburban county in my state and see what they know about state level regulation. Then the plan is to start contacting states. That, along with the AVMA, should help me find state regs. From there it should be easy — once the agency is known it’s simple to find relevant code and reg.

If I ever get brave enough to try an article, it will probably be about this.

Thanks!

I do want all states. :) I’m just starting close to home and working my way out. These are great — I’m already starting to email. With this I’ll have the California answer soon! (Then just 49 more to go.)
