Deep Litter - been meaning to do this for a while. Today is the day

It's not for everyone. I'll be the first to admit that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to every situation. But wanted to make a couple photo illustrations that might be useful for people considering it. This is my native soil. Sands and hard pack clays.

This is my deep bedding before it's in the coop. Free, but for my labor.

Here it is in the coop under the roasting bars, being mixed with nesting materials. At this point it's truly deep bedding.

When it's spent as bedding I rake it down to the ground where it becomes deep litter and Begins the slow composting process.

A year or so later this stuff I raked off the top two inches or so for illustration

becomes this glorious black gold -

and this is where it went. The better half is very happy with her new rose bed, and we'll grow some climbing veg on the trellis as well, at least this first year.

Often as we talk about the method, I figured it was past time to take some photos so we can link back to this in the future. AND I needed to empty under the raised coop - more to do, using the rest to make raised rows for cucumbers. I assume would work well for potatoes, too - but I have no potato starts at the minute.

I should add photos from mine, which is similar but not identical.

I probably won't harvest compost until fall though.
