Deep Litter Method in the run????

I'm convinced! I read that someone had put leaves in their run, so I went to my Mom's(they have huge tree's, and I have none), and raked up four trashbags full of leaves. I put them down in my run, and the hens went nuts! Its like watching kids in a ball pit at chucky cheese! Now my run looks neat, no more bare dirt, and my girls are so happy! Plus I think I made my Dad happy, he doesn't have to rake his front lawn!
I'm going to go rake the backyard tomorrow, and bag up somemore leaves to add when these get trampled.

What about a grass run that only has 2 chickens? even though it's big and still has grass, it's starting to get poopy. Should I just keep trying to pick out the poo from the grass? Hard to do when it's been raining nonstop!

Rinsing it down into the grass causes flies. I been there and done that!! NoNo

My two bits: pine shavings have worked really well in the coop, even though there are two more chickens than there should be. Loose dirt and twice daily cleaning works very well in the run, and although it takes time, costs me nothing. How can one do it when one is working, one may ask? Answer, one gets up when the rooster crows, lets chickens into the tractor, cleans out coop and run. Sets up run with treats. One then remembers that one is wearing pajamas and sneaks back into house. Shortly before work, one (properly attired) lets chickens back in run. With treats! After work, one lets chickens back into tractor, cleans out run, and then remembers one is still wearing work clothes.

That's how I do it

where i am it is super dry, and we get a lot of wind so that also helps with keeping the moister down, i put two bails of straw down this weekend, the leaves from the garden, and all the mulched wood my dog can provide. i gave it a good sprinkling of DE and let the chickens loss;
it was almost better then chistmas or them.

I stayed away from using wood shavings because when they get wet they start to stink, and the last thinking i want is a stinky run, i only use wood shaving inside the coop, because i clean it a couple times a week.
