Deep litter method Vs. Traditional Cleaning

I have a flock of around 30ish sparrows that live here year round. They're in and out of the run all the time, plus the scrub jays, doves, etc. No parasites.

Wood ash is just that, ashes from my wood stove. When it's dry I put them in the run, but during the mud season I pick a spot in the coop and use that. They will turn your light colored birds interesting colors!
I have that DE gives my dark ( RIR banties ) and nice splash lavender colour.lol.
I could trade mark some 'fake' Rhode Island Red Lavender splash chickens.lol.
I will burn some scrap wood we have tomorrow. Does is last well or do you need a heap?

i did this with one bottle about two years ago. I had an extra bottle of lice shampoo, for people its the same stuff, from a mission trip we had taken so i mixed it in a used windex bottle, cleaned out of course, and i sprayed it on the roosts just before dark, didnt have any lice but i thought well i got this extra bottle why not use it. So you might try something like that.
So I can use human de-licer on my chickens?

I always just dump it in a pile in the run, not in a container or anything, so it gets dissipated into the ground fairly soon. I'm sure if you used some type of container to make a dedicated dust (ash) bathing area, it would hang around longer.

Don't mean to sound condescending, but just make sure ALL the coals are dead--it takes longer than you'd think, especially if you don't want to hose it down---I melted a hole in a plastic trash can once thinking the ash bucket had cooled completely

I hope if I'd have dumped it in the run the chickens would have had the sense to stay out of it--or I could have had bbq legs and wings

Ok, thanks for the help!

Chickens don't seem to have any sense of heat with fire. We had a bon fire on the chicken run and they ran right up to it, eating the bugs that where crawling out.
I had to stand guard to make sure they didn't as you say have bbq chickens.

@cluckcluckluke
it's the same active ingredient and i figure if it is safe to put on a human head it would be more than okay for my chickens. I mixed it with water and put in a bottle because i could squirt it on the chicks back and butt and on the roost bars it didnt bother my chicks at all. Like i said though i used this on some chickens that were not in my main coop. Had then in quarintine as i had gotten them from some person and was doing as a prevenative measure.

Yeah I suppose.
But humans don't preen themselves...or not with their mouths anyway. So couldn't the chickens get sick from taking it in when they preen?

I have used DLM ever since I started and I am well satisfied.

I have openings so that they can at free will go outside. There's snow on the ground and they aren't going out much. They can get out and it allows them to get under the coop. They are able to exit the coop directly under the coop so they don't have to go into the yard. Most of their time they are in the coop.I have a 3 stage area coop so they don't stay in one area all the time

.I don't worry about the liter getting moved around because they do their dust bathing during the day and this keeps the liter mixed up.They seem to be fine.I placed a lite under my water and it isn't working quit as I had wanted

.I also placed lites under my nest boxes and i'm not satisfied with that

. I want to keep eggs from freezing.I don't clean my coop on a regular bases.I do plan on spring cleaning this spring tho.I have had no problems with health issues and my chickens appear to be fine.Every now and then I may get a little odor but it comes and goes so I feel that I am fine there.

im sure you could wash them if you are concerned about it. Like i said i didnt notice my birds get sick. And i did not use it full strength it was diluted. Also i dont think it would be much different from the lice spray you get at tsc. Like i said i had it around. So i guess you have to decide whats best for you and your birds.

I mark in the paragraph where I want the lil fellow to go.I then pull up the face that I want to put there.I click on it and there it goes.If I want more I do the same thing until I have all that I want on the page. It's the lil smiley face in the area where you can make changes in your fonts and adjustments
