You use pine shavings instead of hay or straw? How deep is it? You say they scooch down into it but as they get lower, they are getting near the wet area, no?

It's probably 8" deep right now. The only wet area they may touch is where they have slept overnight but I clean that up every day. I also use Oxine ah to spray my chickens roosts and the shavings daily this kills any nasties. Once in a while I sprinkle baking soda over the shaving and mix it in. But this how I have done my coops for many years. I tried straw
when I first started keeping ducks and did not like it because it stays wet shavings soaks up the wet pretty much.
