Hey all - strange, my very healthy, active, laying, bright pink comb, social and completely otherwise normal hen (just wanted to throw all of it out there because she is not sick at all - I am down there with them every day and she is completely normal, eating away, active and social) But she is interesting because she breathes SO heavily when she sleeps but closed mouth! she is not panting, cuz her beak is closed, but she breathes so hard when she sleeps that she kind-of rocks back and forth. No signs of illness, just weird to watch her sleep. Anybody ever had this? Again, not open mouth breathing. Every thing I google about his I get search results of panting/open mouth breathing, but she has her beak closed. ???

I haven't seen that, hopefully someone will have an explanation!

You reminded me of my trip into the coop tonight at roost time. Not yet full dark, but I'd had a light on in the coop. One hen (of 42 total) was sound asleep on her roost. Head tucked under her wing, in a tight fluffy ball - so tight I at first I couldn't tell which end was which! All of the others were fully awake, cooing, crowing, pecking and fussing, the general bedtime routine. I closed windows, petted several, moved one hen to her favorite roost, was in and out of the coop with waterers & feeders, and in general everyone making a bunch of noise. She never wiggled a feather. I mean SOUND asleep! I even put my face within 6 inches of her and talked to her.... nothing. LOL. I didn't bother her. Wish I could sleep like that!
