Deer Netting

Where can I get a large piece of deer netting from? Lowes said theirs was only 4x25 and I need 25x25. Thanks y'all

have you called harware or garden stores? how about home depot? I know ourr true value carries electric fencing they may have it as well?

I used the kind from lowes. They have two kinds. One is BIRD netting - it's 14 x 14.

The other is DEER netting - it's actually 7' by 100'. I used it by overlapping the long edge and connecting it with Cable ties. You end up with a seam of cable ties but it works just fine - cable ties also work well for taking up slack if your run is not a very even shape.

For $14 or less a roll, that's a lot cheaper than buying actual aviary netting. And it's strong enough to keep the chickens IN and to at least slow down/deter flying predators.

From that distance, you can't even see the netting at all...

My neighbor used the 7' to go around their whole property to keep the deer out and the deer ran right through it. Turkeys and other larger birds got caught in it and ripped it. I have a roll already so I was planning on using it for the higher part of the fence and use some 4' high wire fence for the lower.

I don't think this stuff should be used as DEER FENCING - I have no doubt a deer would run right through it. It's made to drape over shrubbery and trees to keep deer from eating the foliage - NOT for a fence to keep them out.

I have had mine up almost 6 months now and it's working great for the purpose I have it for - a cover to keep my chickens IN. I also am using it in my peacock pen and it works for them too - and they are much stronger flyers than the chickens.

Mine is fairly taut - not stretched, but I have taken up any slack with cable ties, to minimize the chance of a chicken getting caught up in it. No problems at all so far.

I don't think it would keep out a VERY strong and determined bird of prey, but it would deter them and slow them down. Same for something like a raccoon or possum. And a dog trying to jump the fence would probably go right through the neeting on the top.

I have 4' chain link fencing as the bottom part of the run, and the girls are secured in their coop at night...Plus, we aren't in a really 'high' predator area either... but we do have raccoons and possums and owls and hawks and I'm sure there are foxes in the woods too. So far so good...knocking on wood....

I don't like the bird netting....deer netting looked like the same thing. First snow and the netting was down and torn. Of course, in NC you don't have to worry much about it. But it just seemed so flimsy. I'd rather spend a few extra bucks and have it last and not worry about it. We have to redo all my netting cuz the bird netting did not stand up to our weather.

Susan thanks, I went to Lowes and got the deer netting. It will be used on top or their run to keep hawks and owls out. We have welded wire and 1/4 inch hardware cloth for the run part, I just needed something to go over the top.

My plan is to get some of the 7'X100' deer netting and use it to make a temporary, moveable yard for my small flock. I live in the suburbs and my yard is such a stupid shape that we can't put up permanent fencing. But we also don't worry about large predators - foxes/coyotes/etc. Hawks are our main concern. So dh is going to attach some PVC poles every so often on the netting and we'll use trees in the yard to form the borders. The chickens will mainly be in their run during the day and locked in the coop at night and they'll have "proper supervision" when in their big play-yard.

We did get a pretty heavy dusting of snow/ice/sleet/freezing rain mix back a month or so ago. When I went out that morning I was like this:

because the PVC poles were all drooping with the weight of the ice on the netting.

I went out and just shook the poles to break up the ice and get it off the netting, and the poles went right back up again! I was very happy!!

Of course, that's with a light load - my PVC & deer netting method wouldnt work if you live somewhere where you get a lot of the wintry stuff.

Deer netting works just fine here for the top of the run. It takes the snow well. Bird netting is another issue. There is a definate difference in strength.
