Deer Scram Repellant

Living next to Cherokee National Forest results in a constant visit from roaming deer. They love certain tree leaves and plants. Want to use Deer Scram which is nothing more than blood meal pellets. I have 5 free range chickens and concerned that they will eat the pellets. Is blood meal poisonous to chickens?

Blood meal is safe for chickens. The packaging should say whether its non toxic. But I would double check the ingredients to be sure that's all that's in it.

According to the ingredient label, it is <Naturally organic, non toxic>

With these ingredients:

Meat dried meal
Dried Blood
Garlic
White pepper
Cloves

It looks harmless but it's also possible the chicks will like it and eat it up before it can work. :-(

Deer steer clear of human and dog urine.

Have your SO do his thing outside a perimeter or collect some in your home and pour it around the area you want to protect.

We have the same problem. With hostas and apple trees, and living smack in the middle of a natural migration trail for deer, we get a lot of them, but they fear us and the dogs. They steer clear of anywhere the dogs have marked with a good 200 feet.

Just an idea for a solution that is free and natural...(and, of course, doesn't smell to us humans)

While that may be true for deer that have little to no human or dog encounters but where I live in a suburban/rural area deer don't seem the least bit fazed by either. There is a bush in my driveway that was my dogs first stop every day but it was also a favorite with the local deer herd as well. As for myself I find it quicker to do my thing outside than drag chicken poop or mud into the house so wherever I was there you go. I would go with deer fencing if you really wanted to protect your plants. I had a friend buy these electronic deer repeller. It actually attracts the deer and then zaps it. Work for a while but they ate the arborvitaes he was trying to protect and ignored the zappers.

My next door neighbor has this fencing. She puts peanut butter near the wires. The deer are always eating the PB, getting shocked and leaving. Maybe because they actually eat something, they are less inclined to tussle with the shock to get at whatever was their original goal. :-D
