We had four RIRs and two Ameraucanas... The Ameraucanas were much more fluffy but much smaller so we treated them as though they were 4-5 days younger based on that and their feather development.
A couple of days ago, one of the Ameraucanas (who DW has named Omelie) became a little more sleepy than the rest, less social, and started sitting down a lot. She was still eating and drinking, but would fall asleep mid-peck. After deciding she was sick, we isolated her from all the other chicks.
She seemed to pick up with a belly full of meal worms, and was quite lively last night, but this morning she was no more.
All the other chicks seem fine. Two-fry, Nodders, Drumstick and Gigi were let out to poke around in the grass as their morning ritual... I couldn't be more proud of Two-fry. She's 4 weeks older than the rest and has taken them all under her wing. She herds them up, keeps them from wandering off, and still has time to come over and say hi.
I didn't know whether to put this in the raising chicks thread or here, but decided here was more appropriate. You know how it is when you have a small defeat but you want to focus on the little victories too.
