For the last week my 18 month old male emu El has not been letting anyone other than my husband near me. If anyone comes over El runs over to greet them and is perfectly friendly and happy until that person comes within 3 feet of me and then he puffs up all his feathers and tucks his chin in and grunts loudly while strutting back and forth at the new person. If one of us backs up a step he unpuffs and hugs me and is happy again. So is this behavior a breeding thing and he thinks I'm his woman or is this just a territory thing or what ?

Sounds like a breeding thing..

Rose has decided I am to be her mate.. doesn't matter to her that I am also a female and of a different species.. when I go to walk past her or am behind her she turns her rear end to me and plops down on the ground refusing to move.. after I walk past her she decides she had better follow me and try to get in front of me to plop back down again.. when she sees me in the yard she comes running and starts it all over again .. I keep telling her she has the wrong idea.. but she doesn't care

I think here in the states it's just the season for the confusion to start.. they look at us as good providers and 'alphas".. so who better to court.. lol

hopefully when breeding season really hits they figure it all out!

Wow thats a riot I think you're right on the breeding thing because the last 2 people that have come to the house that El did this behavior towards were my electrician and my carpenter, both male and both over 6 feet tall. Today my vet came for shots for some of the farmys and she is a 5 foot lady and El was perfectly pleasant towards her, all over her, being silly, grabbed her weight tape out of her bag and ran out with it. So maybe just big guys are not allowed near me. lol

Well.. Rose and Dorian have paired off.. He has started "playing" around at nest building.. showing her bits of hay, twigs and such and grunting when he shows them to her.. then tossing them around himself in a poor attempt at building a nest.. so far she hasn't been impressed with his skills... lol
