My emu’s

Thanks!! I'll check it out.

Also, @New duck mommy 2021, how are your emu's?
River and breeze are amazing
River was siblings to ocean and meadow
But he was hatched by the breeder and not the person she sold eggs to that hatched them
He was hatched a month after they were
Because I was trying to save those babies the breeder offered me River when meadow was put down to keep ocean going
When ocean got put down poor river was alone and sad
We got him a gosling
They are still buddies
I got River at 3 days old and then a few months later I found Breeze
She was 4 -5 weeks old and non related to River
Took them a bit to bond but now they are best friends and never far apart
Hopefully one day they will mate and have little ones !
My favourite bird I have owned
They love people but especially me :))
Today they are locked in the barn with their geese as we are in a major winter storm
I didn’t want them to get stuck Out in the blizzard

I am so curious about how you keep them. Did you ever get fencing up? How tall? What size barn do you put them in if needed? I love the idea of 2 male emu and thought I put this little dream to rest so please talk me out of even thinking about it again! I hatched and raised 7 babies for about a month last spring and loved them!! Six girls and one boy so I didn't keep the one boy because I didn't want him to be alone and didn't want a female.

I’m definitely the wrong person to talk you out of it 😂
I try to talk everyone into them
I did move them into the corals off my barn
They have 4 they can run in and out of
They love running between them all then when they settle they come and hang with the 12 geese that house with them
The corals were here already
Half with 8 foot wind break fencing the rest with 5 foot Kentucky looking fence style
I have added extra boards so the gaps aren’t so big so predators can’t get my geese or emus
The barn was also here
16x32 but sectioned off to 16x16 per side
They share one side with the geese and my emus go to bed in the barn when the geese go in
The ceilings at really high in there
It’s not insulated
2 males would be fine
I myself wanted to breed one day so got one of each
So far my female is just as loving as my male
She is younger so followed how he does things at first
Now she will come to me on her own
I have heard they can be mean but if you connect when young they will grow up loving you
Still need to respect they are a large animal
I have always rubbed their legs , feet and hugged them
If I need to guide either of them they don’t get upset when I have one hand on the back and other by the neck. They just walk with me
I can touch their legs without issues
They both know the word No
If they do get hyper and run through the geese they get told No and immediately stop
But they can be stubborn as well. River needs to be last in the barn. He won’t go in if anyone else is outside still
I rarely have to guide him in as 95% of the time they are all in the barn when I go to lock up for the night

So no more free ranging emu? I have woven wire fencing with a hot wire on top around the entire property including the dedicated animal pastures and pens. I am not certain that would be enough to keep them in. No one near me has emu that I know of for them to go in search of a mate. Wouldn't that be quite the seen, me out going farm to farm searching for my runaway emu?! I've had escaped horses before and that was tricky enough 🤣

I just enjoyed hatching them and raising them so much even if it was only for a month or so. I need to stop going down this rabbit hole. My hubby will be none to pleased 🤦‍♀️

We bought an acreage back in April and I knew I had to get emu’s
first I got River
He is a loving boy
If he sees me he has to be beside me
He will follow me around all the time
He loves back scratches and immediately lays down for more
He is with ducks , turkeys , chickens and geese
The one younger goose is his best friend as he was a lone baby
He was born April 11
Then I got Breeze a young 2 week old female from a different breeder a month ago
They are out together but haven’t bonded yet
I know they may never bond but I’m hoping because they are both young they may
I have read they have to be fenced in. At this time they aren’t and neither one leave the area
I do have a big pen area we are working on fixing as it has some weak spots or broken boards
They will have a barn 16x16 area for themselves
Right now they both sleep in the coop with the ducks / geese
Breeze doesn’t go in herself and I have to catch her at night
River goes in but waits till all other birds are in
If he gets Spicy with his dance around the small birds I say river No and he immediately stops
He listens so well
I have read they aren’t usually like this with listening and can’t be free ranging or they run away
Anyone ever have one that didn’t have to be in a pen ?
Or Is he this good cause he is still young ?
He loves my grandson
They hang out and run around playing
OH HOW CUTE!!!!

OH HOW CUTE!!!!
Not so little anymore. But same amazing loving birds !!
I couldn’t imagine life without them
They have bonded now. They cuddle up and look like a 2 headed emu
Never to far from each other
I have moved them to the barn and corals that are fenced
They also live with the 12 geese

I’m not sure on the fencing
I know they have a lot of power so do need one that can handle them if they do start to run
I decided to stop free ranging when river decided to check out the field across the road
Luckily he listens and if I sit down he always runs over to me
I sat on my side and he came right back
My fear isn’t that he would be long gone but a vehicle coming down the road and hitting him
He may have one day took off and that was scaring me
I just love him so much I need him safe
We are fencing more of our property in spring so he will have trees to run in and be able to come up to the house to see me
He use to love doing that
If he heard the door open he would run right over
I also miss it as much as he does
