And although I was 'prepared' for this, I adore the little guy. I am sure I wouldn't be able to house a roo, but I had a craigslist ad up that a guy responded to using two different 'names' and kept asking if the bird was thick or meaty. This little guy if 4 weeks old mind you. I don't mind him going for meat, but I want him to be treated humanly until that time comes. The guy responding to my ad was definately not fitting the bill.

I notice there are a lot of ads for roosters that haven't been responded to, and I am on my way to post one right now. But.. If anybody in Sacramento, or Northern CA at that wants a very sweet, very pretty EE rooster please do PM me. I want a good home for him, however long it is heh. PM me and I can send more info and stuff.

I didn't know having a roo show up and having to rehome them was so sad! I will miss the little guy..

I will be facing that myself here shortly. This little thing HAS to be a roo because his attitude is I AM PROTECTOR hear me roar!

Yep, been there with Sulo. It is actually funny because the two pullets are very friendly and easy to catch, and once they are in the brooder he is spazzing trying to follow after them like "WHERE ARE MY GIRLS?!" lol. He is a good boy. I got 4 chicks expecting 1-2 roo's, but it is still hard lol

The thing with roos is that once they mature they usually lose their gentle nature and need working with so they know who is boss. I am lucky that we have a community corner on a busy main street where people get together with their livestock to sell and trade. So I have a place to take him when the time comes.

If his breed is EE and he is not a typical meat bird are the chances good of him being killed to eat?

Only by someone who has no clue that processing removes about 35-40% of their weight. They would wind up with a very small meal. Inform people of that and see their reaction. That will weed out the ones that want it for dinner.

Yeah most people looking for a meal don't realize that all chickens are not meant for eating. Even if you have an lb bird, it's only gonna be about 5 lbs after processing.

I would be interested in raising meat birds if I had more property, but each chicken would be cared for well until that time comes. I have been to a few places in Sacramento where they had roosters chained up like pitbulls (I had called Animal Control on these people previously) and NO hens. The only thing that came to mind was fighting roosters. I definately do NOT want that fate for my little Sulo.

I wonder if you can "de crow" a rooster? lol, kidding of course!

In northern CA, in the same situation...

If you find someone that humanly raises them I'm happy to give them up for dinner, if they live a nice life before...let me know if you find someone like that, please.

thanks so much
