definition of Livestock

They are livestock that are treated like pets.

They get cooed over, loved on, but at the end of the day, we decided to keep chickens as a method of being a little more self-sufficient, so the girls are there for eggs, the boys for keeping the population stable (or dinner, depending on how many boys are born).

But I will always treat animals like pets, it's just the way I am, I like animals, I like to love on them, but it's always with the recognition that they're still animals with a "job".

Just what sort of criteria do they use? I'd love to see that checklist.

I'm glad you asked Mac because I was actually incorrect: the word "livestock" is not used, rather it's "domesticated animals".... Here goes! (the bold is mine so you can see the exceptions)

Section 1
Definitions

1.1 Animals. All mammals and birds including but not limited to horses, ponies, goats, swine, cattle donkeys, Llamas, alpacas, mules, fowl, which are kept or harbored as domesticated animals, provided that the following shall be exempt from these regulations: dogs, cats, rabbits up to six in number, Rodentia up to five in number, Vietnamese pot belly pigs, up to two in number, wild animals, exotic brides, fish reptiles and amphibians. Dogs must be licensed according to the provisions of Westwood Bylaws and of Massachusetts State Law. Wild animals, exotics birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians may be kept as pets subject to the licensing requirements of State Law (Mass General Law C. 131, section 23,25, and 26A) Those wild animals which may be kept without a state license are listed in 321 CMR 9.01.

My town bylaw defines fowl in another section as “including but limited to chickens, turkey, pigeons, doves, capons, hens, pheasants, guinea fowl, ducks, roosters, swans and geese other than wild species.”

This proabley seems really restrictive, but I live in a suburban town only 7 miles from downtown Boston - the commuter rail is at the end of my street

Not in the least rural and I was actually pleasently surprised we could have as many as 10 chickens baes on our lot size of about one acre.

I think my town chicken bylaws are actually very well written and pretty fair to everyone.

Um, you meant birds, not brides, right? Otherwise... wow!

We had to apply for a zoning change where I live. Even though we had over 8 acres in the country we couldn't have livestock because it was zoned residential. Our county defined livestock by category........cattle, swine, equine or poultry. We received our re-zoning for conditional use livestock, meaning we couldn't have a full fledged farm with income producing livestock. SO for their purposes, it's all livestock, for ours they are all pets. The dogs, chicks, donkeys, horses, all pets. Some we eat some we dont.
