Hi Y'all,

I am searching and will continue to do so but perhaps someone on here can help me in a more expeditious manner.

Would someone please post the authoritative, actual, without a doubt, positively known to be true definition of "Splash" and the source for that definition?

Thanks In Advance!

God Bless,

Hi! My definition of splash is a bird that has 2 copies of the 'blue gene'.
No source, just my breeding blue x blue gives a % of splashes.
Why is there a question?

Splash is the colour resulting from the presence of homozygous Blue,Bl. Bateson & Punnett 1906, Lippincott 1918 & 1923, Bohren et al 1943,Cock 1953,Cote 1976 and Wilkins et al 1982.

Splash is the effect on the surface of the water when I do a perfect dive, and trust me its a big splash unlike the ripples done by those olympic divers. Hope that helps.

Hi Tailfeathers, did you want the genetic definition (which you've been given) or the description from the standard?

Thanks! Now where do I find these sources? What are they?

Yes Dipsy, the question was what I asked.

Sonoran, if you have a Standard with a different definition, I'd sure like to see that too.

And just in case anyone else is wondering, I'm trying to make sure that what I think is a Splash is truly a Splash and that there can't be other kinds.

For example, my next question would be, what is a "Sport". Is a "Sport" interchangeable with "Splash"?

Finally, there is a thread going around on BYC and on a Yahoo site that states there is a "Splash Welsummer". To my knowledge that just can't happen but before I unequivocably state so, I want to be sure.

God Bless,

Splash and sport are not the same, although I suppose a splash could be a sport. However not all sports are splash.

A sport is an outcome that is unexpected based upon the parents' genes. Either an new mutation or the result of unknown recessive genes.

Splash is a specific genotype: Bl/Bl. The standards describe a phenotype (appearance), and really pay no attention to the genotype. Here is the description from the 2005 Bantam Standard:
SPLASH PLUMAGE
Color of Male and Female
PLUMAGE: Slaty blue and white that has a faint bluish gray tinge. Blue in feathers in the form of large irregular shaped blobs as distinct from V-shaped ticking. Main tail feathers and primary wing feathers with a lesser amount of blue than the rest of the plumage.
UNDERCOLOR: Slaty blue and sooty white, evenly distributed.
Disqualifications
Any appearance of rust in plumage--More than 50% blue in plumage.

A welsumer is a breed; I believe that it is usually a specific variety, but as with all breeds, I would imagine that a breeder could work on bringing additional varieties into the breed.

There are other varieties that have a somewhat similar appearance to splash: exchequer & paint. I've also heard the term used with homozygous dun (I^D/I^D) as in "splash dun." Dun expresses similarly to blue: one copy dilutes some, a 2nd copy dilutes further.
